Curro Westbrook High School | Gqeberha
About the school
Premier High School Education in Gqeberha
Situated in the secure and scenic Westbrook Estate, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Curro Westbrook High School offers a superior educational environment for learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12. As an IEB school, we provide rigorous academic training in English, ensuring our learners are prepared for both national exams and the challenges of the future. With a commitment to limiting class sizes to a maximum of 25, we guarantee that your child receives the personal attention and mentorship they deserve.
Critical Thinking and Real-World Skills
We are dedicated to moving education beyond the textbook. While we adhere to the national CAPS curriculum, our teaching philosophy is rooted in project-based learning and self-discovery. By engaging in research, experiments, and real-world assignments, learners use their intellectual abilities to make learning material "real." This approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to take initiative—skills that are vital for the leaders of tomorrow.
A Structured Path to Success
The Senior Phase (Grades 8 and 9):
We guide learners through the transition to high school, helping them adapt to increased workloads and higher intensity. We also provide expert guidance on subject choices at the end of Grade 9 to ensure their path aligns with their future goals.
The FET Phase (Grades 10 to 12):
Our focus shifts to preparing learners for the internationally recognized IEB exams. However, we go further by applying work to real-life situations, ensuring deep understanding rather than just rote memorization. We also offer specialized subjects like Robotics to keep our learners at the forefront of technology.
Personalised Learning and Subject Choice
Every child has a unique career path. Through our personalized learning experience, learners can choose elective subjects beyond those physically offered at the school. These subjects are presented digitally and live by expert Curro teachers during the school day, allowing your child to pursue niche interests while still writing the IEB exam for those subjects.
Small Classes, Individual Attention
We believe that a conducive learning environment is one where every student is seen. By strictly controlling the number of learners per class to no more than 25, our teachers have the time and space to provide individual support exactly where it is needed. This fosters a love for learning and ensures your child enjoys coming to school every day.
A Balanced Education
At Curro Westbrook, we believe that academic success must be balanced with physical health and emotional well-being. Our focused variety of sports and cultural activities promotes team awareness, collaboration, and self-confidence. Tailored to the interests of the Gqeberha community, our activities include options such as:
- Creative Arts and Journalism
- Swimming
- Chess

Ian
-I’m extremely concerned about the declining standards at Curro Westbrook, particularly in STEM — an area Curro was previously known to be strong in. There seems to be little clear direction regarding the school’s academic strategy and the kind of learners they aim to produce. At present, the school appears to lack strong, capable teachers in key STEM subjects. Recent exam results were poor, and learners were assessed on topics they had not been taught, despite being told the syllabus was complete. This is not a fair or effective learning environment, and it feels as though learners are being set up to fail rather than supported to progress. For these reasons, I will be transferring my child to another school.
