About the school
Welcome to Curro Uitzicht High School: Nurturing Every Learner's Potential
At Curro Uitzicht High School in Sonstraal Heights, Durbanville, we believe every child deserves an exceptional education tailored to their unique needs. We specialise in an assisted learning approach for learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12, offering a compassionate and highly effective pathway within the renowned Curro education framework. Our commitment is to provide the additional support necessary for learners to confidently achieve core academic competencies and thrive.
We understand the importance of individual attention. That's why our classes are capped at just 12 learners, ensuring each student receives personalised guidance and specialised support. Our consistent daily schedules and routines throughout the year provide a vital sense of security, particularly beneficial for learners prone to emotional or anxiety-related needs.
Discover the Power of Assisted Learning
Children learn in diverse ways, and some flourish with targeted assistance in developing fundamental processes like reading, writing, and mathematics. Assisted learning at Curro Uitzicht offers high-quality, immediate support, empowering learners to reach their full potential and master essential academic skills. This approach is designed for children who thrive in environments that offer:
- Immediate, responsive support tailored to their specific learning style.
- Small class sizes where individual needs are met without the risk of falling behind.
- The opportunity to write national matric exams with necessary support and concessions (such as a scribe or reader, subject to Education Department approval), ensuring a clear path to higher education.
'You have not only enriched Emma's life, but ours as a family.'
~ Sarita Stöhr, Emma's mother (Grade 12)
Unrivalled Personal Attention in Small Classes
As a proud member of the Curro school group, our dedication to small class sizes is paramount. With a maximum of 12 learners per class, our passionate teachers truly get to know your child – their strengths, their challenges, and their unique personality. This intimate setting allows us to treat each student as an individual, fostering a deep understanding that goes beyond the curriculum. These small classes also enable our dedicated team of therapists to provide timely and effective support whenever it's needed.
A Learning Environment Designed for Success
Every aspect of our school environment is thoughtfully crafted to promote concentration, serenity, and a sense of calm. Our classrooms are designed with purpose, and our daily school times and schedules remain consistent throughout the year. This unwavering consistency provides a profound sense of security, especially for learners who may experience emotional or anxiety-related challenges.
We go further by actively minimising visual and tactile obstacles, considering the learning environment as a holistic support system:
- Overhead lights are strategically placed to reduce glare and distraction.
- Assessments are often printed on soothing off-yellow paper instead of stark white, reducing visual strain.
- Font sizes on assessments are frequently enlarged to improve readability.
- Learners may apply for various assessment accommodations during exams to ensure fair and accurate evaluation of their knowledge.
Expert Teachers, Empowered Learners
Our teachers are more than educators; they are highly trained specialists in assisted learning. While mainstream teachers care deeply, our staff undergo extensive, specialised training to ensure they possess the precise skills and support systems required to guide learners with specific needs. They are adept at supporting learners academically and emotionally, providing crucial guidance when choosing subjects at the end of Grade 9, and helping students navigate the pressures of high school life.
Comprehensive On-Site Support Team
Your child benefits from immediate, tailored support thanks to our dedicated on-site team. This expert team, comprising a learning support coordinator and part-time occupational therapist, works hand-in-hand with teachers to address your child's specific needs, ensuring they gain the most from our excellent Curro education approach.

Assisted Learning vs. Remedial Learning: Understanding the Difference
It's important to understand the distinction between assisted and remedial learning to ensure your child receives the most appropriate support. Assisted learning at Curro Uitzicht is designed to:
- Provide immediate support while learners follow the mainstream CAPS curriculum.
- Aim to reintegrate learners into mainstream environments by equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence.
- Be suitable for learners who can maintain the basics of the CAPS curriculum with the school's support.
In contrast, remedial learning involves a highly tailored study path for learners with significant, specific difficulties, often leading to them remaining in remedial learning throughout their school careers. Assisted learning is therefore not suitable for learners with high intervention needs, such as severe physical disabilities, intellectual impairment, or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), who would benefit more from specialised remedial education.

-Curro Uitzicht has been on a steady decline and, sadly, has become a last-resort option for many parents. In my experience, we are not getting the education we’re paying for — the fees are higher than at other Curro branches, yet the quality does not match. Many teachers appear to have lost their passion and motivation, and that attitude filters through to the learners. The school markets “assisted learning”, trained staff, and one-on-one support, but from what we’ve seen, it feels more like an illusion than consistent, meaningful help. Staff turnover is constant, with teachers coming and going so often that stability and continuity are lost. After two years, my child is no better off than when they started, and it often feels like some teachers do the bare minimum or are unsure of what they should be doing. I’ve also seen lessons disrupted to the point where teaching stops entirely, and in some cases class time is used for unrelated personal conversations, including complaints about wanting to quit. There were also incidents last year involving questionable art content, and when learners raised concerns, the response was reportedly threats of legal action rather than accountability. I’ve upheld my end as a parent, but Curro Uitzicht has not upheld theirs. They speak about teamwork, but it often feels like the only real “team” is you and your child. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Curro Uitzicht to other parents.
