Career Guidance

Make informed decisions about your future with our expert guides on subject choices and career paths.

Choosing the Right Subjects in Grade 9
The decisions you make in Grade 9 will shape your future career options. Here is everything you need to know.

1. Understand the "Gateway" Subjects

Certain subjects unlock more doors than others. Mathematics (Pure Maths) and Physical Sciences are often required for degrees in Medicine, Engineering, Science, Commerce, and IT. If you aim for a STEM career, these are non-negotiable. Mathematical Literacy is a valid option but will exclude you from many Bachelor of Science degrees.

2. What is a "Bachelor's Pass" (University Exemption)?

To study a degree at a university in South Africa, you need a Bachelor's Pass. This means you must obtain at least:

  • 40% for your Home Language
  • 50% for four other High Credit subjects
  • 30% for two other subjects

3. Designated Subjects List

Universities look at your "Designated Subjects". These are subjects recognized for university entry. Ensure at least four of your chosen subjects are on this list. Common designated subjects include Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, IT, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Visual Arts.

4. Choosing Based on Career Fields

Health Sciences (Doctor, Nurse, Physio)

Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences

Engineering & Built Environment

Mathematics, Physical Sciences, EGD (recommended)

Commerce (Accountant, Economist)

Mathematics, Accounting, Economics, Business Studies

Law & Humanities

Funding Your Studies: Bursaries & NSFAS
Don't let finances stop you from achieving your dreams. Learn about funding options available to South African students.

NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme)

NSFAS is a government bursary for South African students from working-class and poor backgrounds. It covers tuition, accommodation, transport, and provides a living allowance. Who qualifies? If your combined household income is less than R350,000 per year, you likely qualify.

Corporate Bursaries

Many companies offer bursaries to students studying in fields where skills are scarce, such as Engineering, IT, and Accounting. Major providers include banks (Absa, Standard Bank), mining houses (Anglo American), and retail giants (Shoprite).

Tip: Most bursary applications open early in your Grade 12 year. Start looking and preparing your documents (ID, Grade 11 results) as soon as you start matric.
