Children learn by discovering the world around them – and anything learned while playing at a young age is remembered much faster and more efficiently compared to anything learned while sitting at a table in a forced learning environment. As part of the Curro school group, our children enjoy a programme that supports their physical, social, emotional and cognitive well-being. This approach to early childhood development is built around learning and developing through play rather than strict milestones. This means that children feel supported and encouraged instead of anxious and pressured to develop at someone else’s pace. Learning during childhood starts with babies exploring their touch and taste sense while playing with squishy pasta, jelly, and other texture-rich objects. Later on, young toddlers learn the basics of mathematics by playing with building blocks, balls, manipulating objects around their bodies, and other ways. Older toddlers learn the basics of writing and reading with comprehension by drawing, painting, singing, and generally discovering objects that centre around a specific theme. Here are some examples of the areas that are developed by learning through play: Mathematics: shapes, size, time, counting, adding, subtracting Communication: speech, listening, reading, understanding Creativity: drawing, painting, correct pinching of a pencil, dancing Physical well-being: balance, movement, safety Identity and belonging: personality, morals, caring, friendship, sharing Our children automatically progress to our primary school in Grade 1. As part of the Curro school group, they learners enjoy preference when applying to any school in the group. Nearby primary schools include Curro Wilgeheuwel, Cooper College, Curro Douglasdale, Curro Krugersdorp, Meridian Cosmo City, Northriding College. The jump between preschool and primary school can be difficult and Grade R learners are still young children at heart. That is why we accommodate Grade R learners in our preschool. They follow a more structured timetable to help them prepare for the formal learning that starts in Grade 1, but they still have plenty of time and room to run and play. They learn the basic foundations of reading, writing and adding and subtraction, physical education, and more. Teaching takes place in English, and learners have isiZulu as a conversational language. Children need lots of attention and nurturing. That is why our classes are divided by age, and we carefully control the number of children in each class. As part of the Curro school group, our teachers also have one or more assistants, depending on the age group and number of children in the class. By having a limited number of children in class, our teachers can give each one the individual care and attention they need to flourish and feel loved. Our daily programme is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities where children play while they learn. We also offer additional, optional extramural activities as additional opportunities to strengthen focused areas or hone certain skills. Our extramural activities are offered by external tutors or coaches at an additional cost and take place on the school’s premises. As a preschool in Sundowner, Randburg, these extramural activities are tailored to the interests of you and your family. This ensures that your child can grow and excel in areas that they truly enjoy. Your child is sure to find something that will pique their interest. See which activities we offer on our fact sheet.

Facilities

As a preschool in Sundowner, Randburg, we understand that working parents don’t get school holidays, which might pose a challenge when children are at home. That is why our preschool remains open during school holidays with a full holiday-care programme at no additional cost. Early childhood development activities continue, although we may arrange some extra fun activities during this time. We are closed only for a specified period during December and January. Our school fees include lunch and an afternoon snack, which are freshly prepared in our on-site kitchen and are delivered to class in time for snack time or meal time. We also carefully accommodate allergies and other dietary requirements, although we might request a medical letter for severe dietary requirements. This is just to ensure that our kitchen staff can correctly interpret and prepare food for your child. We accommodate working parents with a challenging commute by opening early in the morning. Children are welcomed by their teachers or teacher’s assistants and enjoy some free play before the preschool programme starts later on. Children wholeheartedly run, play, climb, and jump, which may sometimes lead to minor bumps and bruises. This is why our staff are trained in first aid. Please note that national regulations prohibit teachers from dispensing any medicine, even over-the-counter or herbal tonics, without a valid prescription signed by a medical doctor. Therefore, when a child needs medicine during the day, our first-aid officers dispense medicine in class only if a valid prescription is provided. Our classes are divided by age and each teacher has one or more assistants, depending on the group and the number of children in the class (up to group 5). This ensures that each child gets the care and attention they need, and that they can optimally benefit from our preschool programme. We have a group of on-site therapists who operate their private practice from our Learner Support Centre. This team includes occupational and speech therapists and two educational psychologists. The team conducts academic screenings, assessments to determine concession needs, long-term play therapy, counselling, dyslexia assessments, and so much more. They work closely with teachers to recognise when a learner might benefit from their services. Parents are contacted via email with the relevant contact details, and you may then choose to further the discussion. Our speech therapist deals with concerns relating to pronunciation, auditory processing, letter and sound recognition, and several other foundational skills of reading and speaking, while the occupational therapy team supports learners who struggle with physical, cognitive, or perceptual barriers that impact learners’ functioning in the classroom.
