About the school

Empowering Future Leaders in Roodepoort

Situated in Wilgeheuwel, Roodepoort, Curro Wilgeheuwel High School provides a dynamic educational environment for learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12. We are dedicated to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow by balancing academic rigour with physical health and emotional well-being. With English as our medium of instruction, we offer a comprehensive curriculum that includes specialized subjects such as Robotics and isiZulu, ensuring our learners are equipped for a changing world.

Beyond the Textbook: Project-Based Learning

We are committed to making education "real." While we prepare learners for the NSC exams in Grade 12, our approach to the CAPS curriculum is centred on project-based learning and self-discovery. Rather than relying solely on textbooks, our learners engage in research, experiments, and assignments. This method fosters critical thinking, initiative, and the ability to connect different pieces of knowledge—skills that are essential for problem-solving in the modern workplace.

Structured for Academic Success

The Senior Phase (Grades 8 and 9):
We guide learners through the transition to high school, helping them adapt to the increased workload and intensity. We limit class sizes to a maximum of 35 to ensure individual attention, and we provide expert guidance on subject choices at the end of Grade 9.

The FET Phase (Grades 10 to 12):
Our focus shifts to preparing learners for the NSC exams. However, we go further by applying work to real-life situations, ensuring deep understanding rather than just rote memorization. This empowers learners to take charge of their own lives and make a meaningful difference in society.

Personalised Subject Choices

Every learner has unique aspirations. Through our personalized learning experience, learners can choose elective subjects beyond those physically offered at the school. These subjects are presented digitally and live by expert Curro teachers during the school day, allowing your child to pursue niche interests while still writing the NSC exam for those subjects.

A Balanced Education

At Curro Wilgeheuwel, we believe that academic success is best achieved when balanced with sports and cultural activities. Participation in these extra-curriculars promotes team awareness, collaboration, and self-confidence. Our focused variety of activities is tailored to the interests of our community, ranging from debating to chess. Your child is sure to find a passion that piques their interest.

Curro Wilgeheuwel has been a major disappointment. Students complain all year about poor teaching, but nothing changes. Instead of being supported, learners are told to drop subjects they find difficult. Grade 11 Maths results are extremely low (around a 47% average), and learners are encouraged to aim for the bare minimum 30% pass rate. Parents pay for expensive textbooks, but the teacher barely uses them—lessons focus on exam questions without building the basics. For the fees being charged, this is unacceptable. Curro is setting learners up to fail.
