About the school
Curro Heritage House has a preschool in Morningside, Durban, that provides high-quality early childhood development for children from 3 months to 5 years. Our small class sizes and carefully set school fees allow our dedicated teachers to engage each child in our internally developed play-based curriculum, and build strong, caring relationships with each child.
At our Curro School, we provide a safe, nurturing environment in which children are cared for and engaged in play-based developmental activities. Our school fees make it possible for our classrooms to be designed to encourage educational curiosity, while our playgrounds are equipped with play structures that inspire physical development through movement and play. Our small class sizes are divided by age group, which allows our teachers to spend quality time with each child.
At our preschool, our internally developed programme is designed with the Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs) in mind. This approach to early childhood development aims to stimulate physical, social, emotional and cognitive well-being through developmental activities and engaging play areas. ELDAs focus on aspects such as gross-motor development, fine-motor development, social awareness, communication, spatial awareness and arts.
The development of curiosity and imagination in early childhood is vitally important to the development of problem-solving skills and critical thinking later on. Therefore, our preschool encourages playing with loose-parts and multi-purpose playthings, rather than single-purpose toys that don’t involve much imagination. Through loose-parts play, children at our Curro School use their natural curiosity to explore previously undiscovered fascinations, such as stacking, rolling, sliding, fitting, colours and more. This well-developed approach is made possible by our school fees.

As a Curro School, we believe that participation in extramural activities plays an important role in early childhood development. Our daily programme is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities where children play while they learn, which are included in our school fees. Extramural activities are offered as additional opportunities to strengthen focused areas or hone certain skills. Our extramural activities are offered by external tutors or coaches at an additional cost and take place on the school’s premises.
Facilities
Our preschool accommodates working parents by opening early in the morning. Furthermore, children are kept safe and entertained in class until they can be picked up late in the afternoon.
Our preschool remains open during the mid-year holidays, as part of our school fees. Regular activities continue in small class sizes, although we may arrange some extra fun activities during this time. We are closed during other regular school holidays.
Our on-site kitchen is fully equipped to prepare well-balanced, wholesome lunches and puddings for children in all age groups, as per our predetermined menu. All meals are prepared with fresh ingredients just before being delivered to the classrooms and we carefully accommodate allergies and other dietary requirements.
As a Curro School, our classes are divided by age group and teachers' assistants help in each class, depending on the group and the number of children in the class. By having more than one person in class, we ensure that each child in our small class sizes gets the necessary love and attention.
Children wholeheartedly run, climb, and play in ways that could sometimes lead to bumps and scrapes. They might also fall ill during the day. That is why we have a registered nurse on-site during the school day, and all teachers have first-aid training.
Children learn by interacting with the world around them. As a Curro School, our classrooms themselves are considered to be inanimate teachers of sorts. They are designed to allow maximum room for play and movement while being stimulating on a visual and tactile level. An additional indoor play area allows a change in play space on days when the weather doesn’t allow outdoor play.
Our outdoor play areas include jungle gyms, a sand pit, shaded areas for creative and sensory play, and more. These areas are designed to encourage physical play and generally have synthetic grass to prevent allergic reactions. Children are taken outside to play on days with moderate weather conditions to prevent excessive cold or sunburn. Additional safety measures are taken on sunny days.
