About the school

A Nurturing Foundation in the Heart of Sonkring

Located in the suburban serenity of Sonkring, Brackenfell, Curro Brackenfell provides a vibrant preschool environment where education and imagination meet. We offer a specialized Curro-designed programme for children aged 3 months to 5 years, available in both English and Afrikaans. Understanding the needs of modern families, we provide early drop-off times, holiday care (we are open during school holidays!), and a classroom structure where every teacher is supported by dedicated assistants.

The Power of Learning Through Play

We believe that childhood is a journey of discovery, not a race. Our philosophy is grounded in the knowledge that children absorb information faster and more effectively when they are playing, rather than sitting in a forced learning environment. By focusing on play-based development rather than strict milestones, we ensure your child feels encouraged and supported, eliminating the anxiety of external pressure.

Our curriculum evolves with your child:

  • Babies: Explore the world through sensory play, engaging with textures like squishy pasta and jelly to develop touch and taste.
  • Young Toddlers: Discover the basics of mathematics and spatial awareness through building blocks and physical object manipulation.
  • Older Toddlers: Prepare for literacy by drawing, painting, and singing, learning to associate objects with specific weekly themes.

Holistic Development Areas

Our programme is designed to support physical, social, emotional, and cognitive well-being. Through our daily activities, we focus on developing key pillars of growth:

  • Mathematics: Concepts of shapes, size, time, counting, and basic arithmetic.
  • Communication: Enhancing speech, listening, reading comprehension, and understanding.
  • Creativity: Artistic expression through drawing, painting, dancing, and fine motor skills (such as pencil grip).
  • Physical Well-being: Focusing on balance, movement, and safety awareness.
  • Identity and Belonging: Cultivating personality, morals, friendship, and the value of sharing.

Future-Ready Skills: Robotics

At Curro Brackenfell, we introduce technology early to prepare young minds for the future. Our 5-year-olds enjoy Robotics as a dedicated part of their daily programme. Far more than just coding, this subject uses block-based play to bring characters to life, teaching children that on-screen actions have real-world impacts. This engaging process fosters critical soft skills, including problem-solving, perseverance, teamwork, and logical thinking.

Extramural Activities and Group Benefits

Our daily programme is packed with physical and cognitive play, but we also offer optional extramural activities for those looking to hone specific skills. Hosted by external tutors on our premises, these activities are tailored to varied interests, ensuring every child finds a passion to pursue.

Additionally, joining our family connects you to the wider Curro network. Learners enjoy preferential placement when applying to nearby Curro schools, including Curro Durbanville, Curro Rosen Castle, and Meridian Pinehurst.

Facilities

Peace of Mind for Working Parents

Situated in the suburban heart of Sonkring, Brackenfell, our facility is designed to support the busy schedules of modern families. We understand that your work doesn't stop when school terms end. That is why our preschool remains open throughout the school holidays, offering a fun-filled holiday-care programme at a minimal additional cost. We are closed only for a short, specified period during December and January.

To further assist with your daily commute, we open early in the morning. Children are warmly welcomed by their teachers and assistants, allowing them to settle in with free play before the structured day begins.

Nutritious, On-Site Catering

We believe that healthy bodies fuel healthy minds. Our school fees include breakfast, lunch, and a morning snack, all freshly prepared daily in our on-site kitchen. We take great care to accommodate allergies and dietary requirements, ensuring that every meal is safe and nutritious for your child.

Individualized Care and Attention

We carefully control the number of children per class to ensure that everyone is cared for, entertained, and educated effectively. Our classes are divided by age, and every teacher is supported by one or more assistants. We maintain higher staff-to-child ratios for babies and younger toddlers, recognizing that they require unique care and closer supervision.

Health, Safety, and Communication

Your child's safety and your peace of mind are our top priorities. We maintain a transparent and secure environment through the following measures:

  • First Aid Trained Staff: Because active children sometimes get bumps and bruises, our teachers are trained in first aid to handle minor incidents immediately.
  • Strict Medication Policy: We adhere to national regulations and will only dispense medicine in class if a valid doctor’s prescription is provided.
  • Daily Communication: We send a communication book home every day detailing your child’s meals, naps, and emotional well-being, ensuring you never miss a moment of their day.
  • Progress Tracking: Our teachers form close bonds with the children to monitor their adjustment. We provide termly progress reports and host one-on-one meetings with parents to discuss their development.
