Curro Durbanville's RoboMasters win WRO provincial title
Curro Durbanville's Aiden and Blane Ernstzen won the RoboMission Senior title as more than 300 learners gathered for the Western Cape provincial robotics weekend.

Curro Durbanville High ended its World Robot Olympiad provincial weekend with a home-team victory: Aiden and Blane Ernstzen, competing as RoboMasters, won the RoboMission Senior category.
The school said more than 300 learners took part in the two-day Western Cape programme on Friday, 7 August, and Saturday, 8 August. Curro Durbanville's Robotics Club entered three teams, with its two junior teams also completing their challenges.
RoboMasters book their place at nationals
RoboMission asks teams to build and programme an autonomous robot to complete defined tasks on a competition field. In the senior category, RoboMasters converted that work into a provincial title and a place at the national final on 12 September.
Curro Durbanville's results post described the team as provisionally first in South Africa, while noting that several provincial competitions were still to take place. That distinction matters: it is a current ranking rather than a completed national table.
The school also said the September final would be held in Johannesburg. WRO South Africa's public calendar confirms the 12 September date for RoboMission, Future Innovators and RoboSports, although the organiser's page still listed the venue as to be confirmed when this article was updated on 10 August.
A competition designed for doing, not watching
The Explorer category gives younger and less experienced teams a practical entry point into competitive robotics. Teams of two or three learners arrive with a prebuilt LEGO-based robot but no completed programme. They must write and test the code during the competition to solve tasks on the game field.
WRO South Africa divides Explorer into Lite, for ages 8 to 12, and Prime, for ages 11 to 16. The format rewards far more than a robot that moves: teams need to analyse the challenge, divide work, make quick changes and remain composed when a solution fails.
Future Innovators takes a different approach, asking teams to research a real problem, develop a working robotic solution and explain the project to judges. Together, the categories test technical ability, teamwork and clear communication.
When robots meet culture
The international WRO theme for 2026 is Robots Meet Culture. It asks teams to explore how robotics can help to shape, protect and grow art and culture - from preserving heritage to creating new forms of expression.
That theme widens the conversation around STEM education. Robotics is often presented as a purely technical pursuit, yet the strongest projects also require research, communication, design and an understanding of the people who might use the solution.
The route beyond provincials
Provincial events form part of South Africa's pathway towards national competition. WRO South Africa has scheduled its Explorer national final for 11 September, with the remaining category finals following on 12 September.
Internationally, the 2026 WRO final is scheduled for San Juan, Puerto Rico, in December. National qualification requirements differ by category, and the South African organisers publish the official rankings and progression details.
As of 10 August, WRO South Africa's public provincial-results page had not yet published the Western Cape North table. The title, national-final place and provisional national ranking in this report are therefore attributed to Curro Durbanville's post rather than presented as a complete organiser-issued result set.

Hosting a provincial WRO event places Curro Durbanville within a wider network of schools supporting applied STEM learning. It also gives families a visible example of what coding and robotics can look like when learners move beyond classroom exercises.
