About the school

Premier Primary Education in Richards Bay

Grantleigh Primary School provides a nurturing and academically excellent environment for learners from Grade R to Grade 7 in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. As part of the Curro school group, we offer an English-medium education where class sizes are strictly limited to ensure personal attention. We complement our rigorous academics with a rich variety of sports and cultural activities, supported by convenient services such as aftercare, school transport, and a warm boarding facility for learners from Grade 4.

Project-Based Learning and Innovation

We are committed to an education that extends beyond the textbook. While we follow the national CAPS curriculum, our teaching approach centres on project-based learning and self-discovery. Through research, experiments, and real-world assignments, we encourage learners to use their intellectual abilities to make learning material "real." This methodology fosters critical thinking and ensures a deeper understanding of concepts.

Structured Phases of Development

The Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3):
We focus on helping Grade R learners adapt to formal schooling and master the essential building blocks of education. Notably, chess is included in the programme to stimulate strategic thinking. Key areas include:

  • Language: Reading, spelling, understanding, speaking, and listening.
  • Mathematics: Number sense, addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
  • Life Skills: Physical education, real-life experiences, problem-solving, and creativity.

The Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to Grade 7):
As work becomes more abstract, we utilize project-based learning to help learners explore material independently. To prepare them for the digital future, Robotics is included as a subject throughout the primary school years.

Language and Global Skills

Teaching takes place in English, but we celebrate our diverse community by offering Afrikaans and isiZulu as additional language options. By combining these language skills with future-focused subjects like Robotics, we ensure our learners are well-rounded and ready for high school.

A Balanced Lifestyle

At Grantleigh, academics are balanced with a vibrant sports and cultural programme. Participation promotes team awareness, collaboration, and self-confidence. Our activities, ranging from t-ball to basketball, are specifically chosen to help learners formulate ideas and gain the confidence to make their voices heard.

Boarding and Curro Benefits

For families living further afield, our boarding school (available from Grade 4) offers a safe, caring home away from home. Additionally, being part of the Curro family means learners enjoy preferential placement when applying from other group schools, and we provide full support for families relocating to the area.

Our Heritage: Rooted in Values

Grantleigh is a school born from a vision of excellence and Christian values. Founded in 1996 by Fred and Renette Grant on their Mposa farm, the school started with just a handful of learners on the founders' veranda. Swimming lessons took place in the family pool, and cricket was played on the tennis court.

The community's demand for high-quality education led to rapid expansion. By 2003, under the guidance of our first headmaster, Peter Terry-Lloyd, Grantleigh offered Grade R to Grade 12. In 2014, we proudly joined the Curro school group as a Curro Select school, continuing our legacy of providing well-rounded education to the Richards Bay community.
