That is why our approach to teaching the national CAPS curriculum is based on project-based learning and self-discovery. This approach allows our primary school learners to explore the learning material beyond just the textbook through research, experiments and assignments. Regular assessments and tests still take place, but it’s important to us that learners can use their intellectual abilities to make the material real to them in some way. As part of the Curro school group, we can tap into a wide network of teachers and support that can ultimately give your child an excellent education that stretches beyond the classroom. Our foundation phase starts by helping Grade R learners adapt to the more formal learning that starts in Grade 1. In this phase, they learn the basic foundations on which all further learning is based – and even have chess as part of the programme: Language (read, spell, understand, speak, listen) Mathematics (count, understand numbers, addition, subtraction and multiplication) Life skills (physical education, real-life experiences, problem-solving, creativity) In the intermediate phase, the work becomes less tangible or real, and more abstract. To do this, learners start with project-based learning, which means they do research, assignments, and experiments to explore the material outside just the textbook. Teaching takes place in English, and learners can choose Afrikaans and isiZulu as additional language options. They also have Robotics as a subject throughout primary school. As part of the Curro school group, learners enjoy preference when applying to us from any school in the group. Should you move to the area, we will help you through the transfer process from start to finish. Should you want your child to join our school but live far away, they can find a warm, caring home away from home in our boarding school. Read on for more! Contact us to arrange a tour of our beautiful primary school. After recognising the need for good education in their area, Fred and Renette Grant founded Grantleigh on their Mposa farm in 1996. Their goal was to provide a well-rounded and balanced education based on Christian values (ethics and morals). Our school opened its doors in 1997 with 16 nursery-school learners and 5 junior-preparatory phase learners dressed in civvies, and teaching took place on the founders’ veranda and in their TV room. Swimming lessons were offered in the family pool and cricket lessons started on their tennis court. As interest in the school grew rapidly, construction soon began on school buildings and sports fields. By 1998, 123 learners started the school year in newly built classrooms, we started a transport service, and requests from parents soon sparked talks to include a high school the following year. Our school kept expanding to higher grades, more transport services and a wider variety of offerings in academics, sports and culture. Our first headmaster, Peter Terry-Lloyd, brought great expertise to our school and by 2003 – only seven years after opening – our classes spanned Grade R to Grade 12 for the first time. During that year, we also inducted our first head boy and head girl, as well as our first parent advisory committee (PAC). By 2014, we had joined the Curro school group as a Curro Select school and have continued to provide excellent education to learners in the wider Richards Bay area. We are continuously improving our offering and expanding our school to accommodate more learners, still within small class sizes, with a wider range of interests.
