We are committed to providing learners with an excellent education. That is why our approach to teaching the national CAPS curriculum is based on project-based learning and self-discovery. As an IEB school, this approach allows our high school learners to explore the learning material beyond just the textbook through research, experiments and assignments, while still preparing them for their exams in Grade 12. Regular assessments and tests still take place, but it’s important to us that learners can use their intellectual abilities to make the material real to them in some way. This teaches them to take initiative and make connections between pieces of knowledge – which further develops critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
As part of the Curro school group, learners enjoy preference when applying to us from any school in the group. Should you move to the area, we will help you through the transfer process from start to finish. We also have a boarding school for learners who want to join but may not live nearby – a safe, caring home away from home.
Our senior phase starts by helping Grade 8 learners grow accustomed to the greater workload of higher intensity in high school. We limit the number of learners in each class to ensure that they get individual attention in exactly the places they need. Our learners also receive guidance when choosing their elective subjects at the end of Grade 9. From Grade 10, we prepare learners for the IEB exams in Grade 12. However, we focus on more than just assessments, by applying the work to real-life situations. This helps learners to understand the work much better, and further empowers them with knowledge and skills to become the leaders of the future.
Our learners can choose elective subjects beyond what is offered at our school. These subjects take place digitally and are presented live by Curro teachers. Lessons are scheduled during the school day, with supervised self-directed sessions after hours. These subjects can be seen as an extension of the excellent Curro education your child gets with us, and they still write the IEB exam at the end of Grade 12.

After recognising the need for good education in their area, Fred and Renette Grant founded Grantleigh on their Mposa farm in 1996. Their goal was to provide a well-rounded and balanced education based on Christian values (ethics and morals). Our school opened its doors in 1997 with 16 nursery-school learners and 5 junior-preparatory phase learners dressed in civvies, and teaching took place on the founders’ veranda and in their TV room. Swimming lessons were offered in the family pool and cricket lessons started on their tennis court. As interest in the school grew rapidly, construction soon began on school buildings and sports fields. By 1998, 123 learners started the school year in newly built classrooms, we started a transport service, and requests from parents soon sparked talks to include a high school the following year.
Our school kept expanding to higher grades, more transport services and a wider variety of offerings in academics, sports and culture. Our first headmaster, Peter Terry-Lloyd, brought great expertise to our school and by 2003 – only seven years after opening – our classes spanned Grade R to Grade 12 for the first time. During that year, we also inducted our first head boy and head girl, as well as our first parent advisory committee (PAC). By 2014, we had joined the Curro school group as a Curro Select school and have continued to provide excellent education to learners in the wider Richards Bay area. We are continuously improving our offering and expanding our school to accommodate more learners, still within small class sizes, with a wider range of interests.
