About the school
Welcome to Curro Oakdene Preschool: A Nurturing Foundation for Young Minds
Nestled in the heart of Johannesburg South, Curro Oakdene offers a premier early learning centre where children embark on a journey of discovery and growth. Our expertly crafted preschool programme is designed by Curro, providing an exceptional early childhood development experience for children aged 3 years (turning 4) to 5 years old. We believe in fostering a love for learning from the very start, within an environment that is both stimulating and deeply caring.
Personalised Attention in Every Classroom
We understand that young children thrive with individual attention. That's why we meticulously control the number of children in each class, ensuring that every child receives the dedicated care and engagement they need to flourish. Our classrooms are thoughtfully divided by age, and each features not only a passionate teacher but also one or more assistants, depending on the group size and age. This commitment to intimate class sizes allows our educators to truly get to know each child, providing the personalised support and love that helps them feel secure and confident.
Flexible Options and Essential Inclusions
To accommodate the diverse needs of modern families, Curro Oakdene offers both half-day and full-day school options. Parents can rest assured that nutritious meals and snacks are thoughtfully included in our school fees, taking one less worry off your plate. The Innovative Curro ELDA Programme: Learning Through Joyful Discovery
As a proud member of the Curro school group, our preschool programme is meticulously designed to support your child's holistic well-being – encompassing their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. This innovative approach to early childhood education is built around the Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs). The ELDA framework focuses on broad developmental areas rather than rigid milestones, creating a supportive, pressure-free environment where children are encouraged to develop at their own unique pace.
Children spend their days immersed in joyful play and creative exploration, with our dedicated teachers and teacher's assistants gently guiding them through activities that thoughtfully engage each ELDA area.
Key Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs)
- Identity and Belonging: Cultivating personality, fostering friendships, and understanding the importance of sharing.
- Physical Well-being: Developing balance, coordination, movement skills, and an awareness of safety.
- Communication: Enhancing speech, active listening, and comprehensive understanding.
- Creativity: Sparking imagination through playing, drawing, painting, and dancing.
- Mathematics: Exploring fundamental concepts like shapes, size, time, and counting.
- Learning About the World: Encouraging curiosity and understanding of the environment around them.
Enriching Experiences Beyond the Classroom
Our commitment to comprehensive development extends to specialised programmes and play philosophies:
- B-Active Programme: An integral part of our curriculum, the B-Active programme introduces children to dynamic physical activities. Offered by private coaches during regular school hours every Monday and Tuesday, it promotes physical literacy and a love for movement.
- Cultivating Curiosity with Loose-Parts Play: We believe that the development of curiosity and imagination in early childhood is fundamentally important for building problem-solving skills and critical thinking later in life. That's why our excellent preschool programme champions playing with loose-parts and multi-purpose playthings over single-purpose toys. Through open-ended loose-parts play, our children naturally explore and discover fascinating concepts like stacking, rolling, sliding, fitting, colours, and much more, igniting their innate sense of wonder.
Optional Extramural Activities: Expanding Horizons
Beyond our vibrant daily programme, which is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities, we offer an exciting array of optional extramural activities. These additional opportunities are designed to strengthen focused areas or hone specific skills, catering to the individual interests of your child and family. Provided by expert external tutors or coaches at an additional cost, these enriching activities take place conveniently on the school’s premises. Your child is sure to find something that sparks their passion and helps them grow!

A Nurturing Start in Johannesburg South
Located in the heart of Johannesburg South, Curro Oakdene Preschool offers a specialized Curro-designed programme for children aged 2.5 to 5 years. We are dedicated to providing excellent early childhood development in a safe, entertaining environment. By carefully controlling the number of children per class, we ensure that every little one receives the personal care and attention they need to thrive.
Flexible Options for Modern Families
We understand that every family has a different schedule. That is why we offer both half-day and full-day options. Our programme is structured so that core learning activities take place in the morning, ensuring that half-day learners never miss out on essential development. For working parents with challenging commutes, we also offer early drop-off times, welcoming children with free play before the structured day begins.
Year-Round Support at No Extra Cost
Working parents don't get school holidays, so neither do we. Our preschool remains open throughout the school holidays with a full holiday-care programme included in your school fees. While the focus shifts to extra fun, our developmental activities continue uninterrupted. We are closed only for a short, specified period during December and January.
Nutritious, On-Site Catering
Healthy bodies fuel healthy minds. Our school fees include breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. All meals are freshly prepared daily in our fully equipped on-site kitchen and delivered directly to the classrooms. We take great care to accommodate allergies and dietary requirements, ensuring that every meal is safe, wholesome, and suitable for your child.
Individualized Attention and Safety
Children flourish when they feel seen and safe. Our classes are divided by age, and every teacher is supported by one or more assistants depending on the group size. This ensures that your child gets optimal benefit from our programme.
Health and Safety Protocols:
- First Aid Trained: Because active children love to run, climb, and jump, all our teachers are trained in first aid to handle minor bumps and bruises immediately.
- Medication Policy: We adhere strictly to national regulations. We will only dispense medicine in class if provided with a valid prescription signed by a medical doctor.
Inspiring Learning Environments
Classrooms that Teach
We view our classrooms as "inanimate teachers." They are purposefully designed to be visually and tactilely stimulating while allowing maximum room for movement and play. We also feature an additional indoor play area to ensure fun continues even when the weather doesn't play along.
Outdoor Adventures
Our outdoor play areas are designed to spark imagination and encourage physical development. Generally featuring synthetic grass to prevent allergies, our facilities are safe and engaging. We are mindful of the weather, ensuring children play outside only in moderate conditions with appropriate safety measures on sunny days.
Our outdoor facilities include:
- Jungle gyms and slides
- Swings and sandpits
