As part of the Curro school group, our children enjoy a programme that supports their physical, social, emotional and cognitive well-being. This approach to early childhood development is built around Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs), which focus on development areas rather than strict milestones. This means that children feel supported and encouraged instead of pressured to develop at someone else’s pace.
The learning and development areas include the following:
Identity and belonging: personality, friendship, sharing
Physical well-being: balance, movement, safety
Communication: speech, listening, understanding
Creativity: playing, drawing, painting, dancing, imagination
Mathematics: shapes, size, time, counting
Learning about the world: exploring and understanding the world around them
Do you want to know more? Visit this page on our website to discover more about the ELDAs and how they work together to give children a high-quality preschool programme.
Our preschool programme is presented through a daily routine that focuses on letting children learn by having lots of fun within a framework. The schedule creates space for creative activities, running and playing, singing and dancing, and so much more! This also provides children with stability and a sense of safety.
You can view the activities that form part of this schedule on our fact sheet.
Children need lots of attention and nurturing – tiny babies even more so. That is why our classes are divided by age, and we carefully control the number of children in each class to no more than 10 to 20, based on age. As part of the Curro school group, our teachers have one or more assistants, depending on the age group and number of children in the class. There are often more teacher’s assistants by younger babies, since their needs are so unique from the older groups. By balancing the number of children and teachers in class, your child can get the individual care and attention they need to flourish and feel loved.
The jump between preschool and primary school can be difficult and Grade R learners are still young children at heart. That is why we accommodate Grade R learners in our preschool. They follow a more structured timetable to help them prepare for the formal learning that starts in Grade 1, but they still have plenty of time and room to run and play.
They learn the basic foundations of reading, writing and adding and subtraction, physical education, and more. Teaching takes place in English and Afrikaans, and learners have isiZulu, Afrikaans and Setswana as additional languages.
Our daily schedule is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities where children play while they learn. In addition to those, we offer optional extramural activities as extra opportunities to strengthen focused areas or hone certain skills. These activities are offered by external tutors or coaches at an additional cost and take place on the school’s premises during school hours.
As a preschool in Kathu, these extramural activities are tailored to the interests of you and your family. This ensures that your child can grow and excel in areas that they truly enjoy. Your child is sure to find something that will pique their interest.

Facilities
As a preschool in Kathu, Northern Cape, we understand that working parents don’t get school holidays, which might pose a challenge when children are at home. That is why our preschool remains open during school holidays with a full holiday-care programme at no additional cost. Early childhood development activities continue, although we may arrange some extra fun activities during this time. We are closed only for a specified period during December and January.
We accommodate working parents with a challenging commute by opening early in the morning. Children are welcomed by their teachers or teacher’s assistants and enjoy some free play before the preschool programme starts later on.
We accommodate your household’s unique rhythm by having half-day and full-day options. These options have unique fee structures, and the core early childhood development activities mostly take place during the morning. This means that your child will not lose out on any learning if you choose the half-day option – although activities that take place in the afternoons remain developmental in nature.
Our school fees include breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack. These meals are freshly prepared in our on-site kitchen and are delivered to class in time for snack time or meal time. We also carefully accommodate allergies and other dietary requirements, although we might request a medical letter for severe dietary requirements. This is just to ensure that our kitchen staff can correctly interpret and prepare food for your child.
Our classes are divided by age and each teacher has one or more assistants, depending on the group and the number of children in the class. This ensures that each child gets the care and attention they need, and that they can optimally benefit from our preschool programme. There are often more assistants for the younger ones and babies, as they have needs that are unique from any other age groups.
Children wholeheartedly run, play, climb, and jump, which may sometimes lead to minor bumps and bruises. This is why our teachers are trained in first aid and we have a registered nurse on-sit. Please note that national regulations prohibit teachers from dispensing any medicine, even over-the-counter or herbal tonics, without a valid prescription signed by a medical doctor. Therefore, when a child needs medicine during the day, our first-aid officers or nurse dispense medicine in class only if a valid prescription is provided.
