About the school

Curro Hermanus has a preschool in Sandbaai, Hermanus, that provides high-quality early childhood development for children from 4 months to 5 years. Our classes are divided by age, and we carefully control the number of children per class to ensure that they are all cared for and entertained. Our internally developed preschool programme engages inherent curiosity and love of play, while supporting their well-being all-round. Get an overview of everything we can offer you on our fact sheet. As part of the Curro school group, our children enjoy a programme that supports their physical, social, emotional and cognitive well-being. This approach to early childhood development is built around Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs), which focus on development areas rather than strict milestones. This means that children feel supported and encouraged instead of pressured to develop at someone else’s pace. Children spend the day playing and being creative while teachers and teacher’s assistants guide them through the activities to ensure that the ELDA areas are engaged. The learning and development areas include the following: Identity and belonging: personality, friendship, sharing Physical well-being: balance, movement, safety Communication: speech, listening, understanding Creativity: playing, drawing, painting, dancing, imagination Mathematics: shapes, size, time, counting Learning about the world: exploring and understanding the world around them Do you want to know more? Visit this page on our website to discover more about the ELDAs and how they work together to give children a high-quality preschool programme. The development of curiosity and imagination in early childhood is vitally important to the development of problem-solving skills and critical thinking later on. Therefore, as part of our excellent preschool programme, we encourage playing with loose-parts and multi-purpose playthings rather than single-purpose toys that don’t involve much imagination. Through loose-parts play, our children learn to use their natural curiosity to explore previously undiscovered fascinations such as stacking, rolling, sliding, fitting, colours, and more. Our preschool programme is presented through a daily routine that focuses on letting children learn by having lots of fun within a framework. The schedule creates space for creative activities, running and playing, singing and dancing, and so much more! This also provides children with stability and a sense of safety. See what we offer on our fact sheet. Children need lots of attention and nurturing. That is why our classes are divided by age, and we carefully control the number of children in each class to no more than 10 to 20, based on age. As part of the Curro school group, our teachers also have one or more assistants, depending on the age group and number of children in the class. By balancing the number of children and teachers in class, your child can get the individual care and attention they need to flourish and feel loved. Our preschool is built on a balance of values that allow learners to learn and grow into the best versions of themselves. We believe that a good education is the basis on which learners can grow to become strong leaders and responsible citizens who will make a positive change in their communities. Our value system is based on four pillars: Child-friendliness Positive discipline Christian values (ethics and morals) Creative thinking We consider these values to be practical extensions of early childhood development. Teachers model these values and children follow suit. This is just one of the ways in which we develop the well-being of the whole child. Our daily programme is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities where children play while they learn. We also offer additional, optional extramural activities as additional opportunities to strengthen focused areas or hone certain skills. Our extramural activities are offered by external tutors or coaches at an additional cost and take place on the school’s premises. As a preschool in Sandbaai, Hermanus, these extramural activities are tailored to the interests of you and your family. This ensures that your child can grow and excel in areas that they truly enjoy. Your child is sure to find something that will pique their interest. See which activities we offer on our fact sheet.

Facilities

We accommodate working parents with a challenging commute by opening early in the morning. Children are welcomed by their teachers or teacher’s assistants and enjoy some free play before the preschool programme starts later on. Our aftercare service is available at an additional cost, as stipulated on our fees letter. Learners are accommodated in safe classrooms and playgrounds and there are two end-time options to suit your family’s needs. As a preschool in Sandbaai, Hermanus, we offer a holiday care service, which is included in the aftercare fees. Children who do not attend aftercare during the term, may attend holiday care at an additional cost. The activities during this time still support early childhood development, but your child won’t miss out on any learning if you choose to keep them home. Our classes are divided by age and each teacher has one or more assistants, depending on the group and the number of children in the class. This ensures that each child gets the care and attention they need, and that they can optimally benefit from our preschool programme. There are often more assistants for the younger ones and babies, as they have needs that are unique from any other age groups. Children wholeheartedly run, play, climb, and jump, which may sometimes lead to minor bumps and bruises. This is why all our teachers are trained in first-aid. Please note that national regulations prohibit teachers from dispensing any medicine, even over-the-counter or herbal tonics, without a valid prescription signed by a medical doctor. Therefore, when a child needs medicine during the day, our first-aid officers dispense medicine in class only if a valid prescription is provided. Our teachers form close relationships with each child, which allows them to know the individual adjustment and progress of your child. At the end of each term, we issue an adjustment or progress report and have a one-on-one with each parent. Your child’s day is also recorded in a communication book, which is sent home each day. This includes meals eaten, drinks consumed, naps taken, emotional state, and more. Children learn by interacting with the world around them. That is why our preschool classrooms themselves are considered to be inanimate teachers of sorts. They are designed to allow maximum room for play and movement while being stimulating on a visual and tactile level. By involving the classroom in the learning experience, your child is engaged in early childhood development even when simply enjoying some lounge time with their friends. Our outdoor play areas include jungle gyms, playhouses, swings, balance beams, and a cycle track. These areas are designed to encourage physical play and generally have synthetic grass to prevent allergic reactions. Additional safety measures are taken on sunny days.
